We all get old (if weíre lucky). But Iím astonished at how quickly my ďfirst fishĒ has apparently aged.
Iíve had him a year, now. He was bigger than some when I got him, but he grew another quarter inch and gained a few grams and much finnage over the next six months. I donít suppose heís more than eighteen months old. He was very energetic and playful during that time with great appetite.
Beginning this year heís slowed down, naps more (have to wake him up to feed him) is less enthusiastic about eating and eats less. Starting to get a humped back, too. But his color is fine, he still uses the whole tank and he still enjoys a good flair, albeit casual (rather dignified) and brief.
His brother, purchased at the same time and kept in the same water, is not as chipper as he once was, but heís more alert and responsive with a better appetite. He still builds an occasional bubble nest.
Iíve heard they live three or more years. Iím not sure this fish is going to make it that long. What do you think?
