broken fin?

Hello everyone,

so my betta has been in his tank (6gal) for a few weeks now and everything was fine until I noticed something strange happened to 1 of his ventral fins.

Taking a picture was a complete failure, so I tried to draw it.
Name: fins.jpg
Views: 408
Size: 49.7 KB

On the left, what the fin looks like, on the right, what it used to look like.

I don't know what to do.... I read something about trimming the fin so it regrows but being a novice the idea of trimming is pretty scary.. I would rather do something else

Any advice?

I tested the water... everything seemed fine =/

It could be fin curling. Without a picture it is hard to tell. Fin curling is nothing to worry about. It's simply aesthetic. It can be caused by hard water or sometimes bad genes (as in petstore-quality bettas).

If you want to be more sure, then look up pictures of curling fins online.

Trimming is never a good idea unless you are experienced handling fish. And even then, betta are so small that one wrong cut or slip can spell their doom.

that's also what I was thinking (about the trimming).

What hardness for bettas is right? the water might indeed be a bit hard... any tips on fixing that?

Betta are very adaptable. Changing the hardness isn't recommended because the fluctuation parameters will be harder on him than adjusting to slightly harder water. I have a betta with a fin like that, and I have very soft water. It isn't always hardness. Genetics play a part, too.
