Breeding related fry?

I've been seeing that people are asking about the quality of a certain betta they have interest in and then they mention a sibling that is available. I was wondering why it is that people can breed betta that are directly related?

I'm pretty ignorant in the ways of breeding betta which is why I would never attempt it. I just would think that breeding a brother and sister would case defects and other stuff? I know that people breed betta that aren't brother and sister but why can this be done and why do you choose to do it? Juuuust wondering. Is it preferable to breed two betta who aren't brother and sister or does it not really matter?

Thanks to anyone who takes the time to answer or read this. I appreciate the info and the help!

If you are trying to breed for a certain trait or number of traits, it's easier to breed a brother to a sister when they both show the traits they are being bred for. It helps narrow down some of the results.
