I've never understood that either. When I write checks, that money is written out of our account. I don't wait for the check to get cashed. On top of that, I check our account often.
I had a landlord that waited too, I always hated it though!

Our homeowners fee is due on the15th of every month and our idiot treasurer doesn't deposit them until around the end of the month.

Our land lord has been known to wait until the middle of the NEXT month to deposit. grrr. on top of being emotional just GRR

This is why we pay with money orders now. I was so sick of that.

We pay our landlord rent with email transfer through the bank. That way, the money is removed from my account and I know how much I can spend etc.. The confirmation email that comes through to tell me when he got it is just a bonus and I catalog them as receipts. Eveything is done with online banking and email.:)
