Fin Rot?

My betta is swimming around happily and has a healthy appetite, but im worried about his fins. What does fin rot really look like? Does your fish act differently? He has a clear ring around his caudal fin, but i think that may just be natural. He also has a tiny tear on his caudal, im not sure if its new, or if i just didnt notice it before since hes a new fish (Its only noticable when he flares). Help?

Never saw fin rot until I bought a betta and after a week notice his tail was not quite right Plus he was basically hanging on the bottom. He has orange finnage, but notice that the ends were not turning red, They were bleeding! So on the advise of Petsmart (yes we do have a good one here) I used bettafix(I know, alot of folks are anti bettafix) and did water changes. He recovered and is doing great. I have attached his current photo.
