For a 3.5g tank, the most common WC schedule would be one 50%, and one 100% change a week. I think you might be able to get away with one 100% change though.

Use a test kit to see how much ammonia he produces.

Welcome! You will find it hard to have just one betta, especially if yours has a great personality. Which my first one did, which is why I now have 11! But you'll see that they're all great fun and interactive. Sounds like he's off to a great start so far!
