Can this java fern be split in two?

My java fern has another plant growing out of it. It has two leaves, and a little bit of roots. I was thinking of just plucking it off. I don't have any driftwood to bind my java ferns to at the moment, so I am just letting them float/sit on the gravel. Do you think this can just be plucked off and planted? It is the section all the way to the left.

I've had good luck in the past just taking some sissors and snipping it in half, in my expierience if it has roots it will eventually take off on it's own, although it might not grow right off the bat for making more roots for itself first.. In your example I'd snip it in the gap. I split some Anubius that way

Java fern doesn't do very well planted in the substrate. It gets all its nutrients from the water column, so it'll eventually rot at the roots if planted. Your plant baby will be fine floating for now, until you come across a nice bit of wood suitable for aquariums (a small one would do, just to weigh it down) or even an ornament (they will grow on just about anything with a textured surface so the roots can get hold). Java fern also reproduces from the leaves, those little babies at the top with the woolly roots can also be separated.
