I think there are always going to be differences of opinion between show breeders and regular betta hobbyists. Show breeders are interested in form and want to improve finnage and regular hobbyists just want a nice pet.

My personal belief is that if someone has everything planned out from the spawning all the way to jarred fish and giving them loving homes for however many offspring they end up with, I am with them all the way for their efforts and endeavors. I have noticed many people on this forum cannot afford a quality pair to begin with and if it is their first time spawning and something goes wrong that could really put a damper on someones enthusiasm for trying to reattempt getting into breeding bettas and possibly becoming interested in breeding bettas for show or making a solid goal for a line.

It just comes down to being aware of what you are getting yourself into on the long, twisted path of breeding bettas. Every betta, no matter what form or quality has their own challenges to wrestle with. Crowntails needing softer water or Veiltails having to put more effort into finding homes.

So whether you are breeding the next BOS fish or a great family pet, as long as you are willing to step up to the plate and get your entire body drenched go for it!

I agree with you wholeheartedly, Sincerely. Fishkeeping is supposed to be an affordable hobby and bettas among the most affordable. Cost should not have to deter an enthusiastic would-be breeder. And great things have often come of humble origins. Many of our most esteemed cat breeds came from "alley cats." The horse of royalty, the Thoroughbred, is derived from the hardy desert horse the Barb. So who is to say a gorgeous betta can't come from a pet store parent? :)
