I've dried flowers before, and it was the same process to what you're talking about with the magazine, just take the leaves (fresh are fine), put them inbetween magazine or book pages, wait a week or so, and they'll be dried out. I don't know why that wouldn't work for you, and how that would be different from them drying out in the sun. Drying is drying, just removing all the moisture from the petals/leaves? Maybe you could PM Old Fish Lady, she's very familiar with drying oak leaves from her own trees, so I'd bet she could tell you if there was a difference. :)
