Aquarium Salt Acclimating?

My fish, Donald, has a very badly torn fin that I am using Stress Coat and AQ to to treat. I did a 100% water change earlier today (his tank was smelly... ew) and added stress coat. He's in a 3 gallon (I think) bowl that I only filled with about 1 gallon of water. I waited about 2 and a half hours before I got a 1/2 gallon bowl and filled it with water with stress coat and 1/2 tsp of AQ. Every 30-45 minutes I'm pouring a little bit more water into the tank. Now, I'm almost done with the bowl.

Should I fix another bowl of water to continue until his tank is full? If I do, should I continue using 1/2 tsp of water, or should there be more because of the 1 gallon of non-AQ water in his tank?

I don't understand. You pre mixed the salt water in a separate bowl and have been adding it gradually for an hour or more to what he's in now?? That's fine. As long as he's in 1 gallon of water for medicating he's okay. You don't have to fill up the whole 3 gallons. Remember to only keep him on salt water treatment for a max 10 days(making the changes every single day). Then 7 off. This should suffice for his ailment.
After the treatment, just keep his water clean by doubling his regular water changes for another 2 weeks or so.

Personally I wouldn't use salt, Betta's are freshwater fish and the salt just causes them irritation to up their slime coat production ... and stress level.

Stress, next to poor water quality, are the biggest causes for disease.

A torn fin isn't something you treat, you just remove the cause (sharp plastic plant, decoration, whatever) and it will heal on its own. Unless it is fin rot, but that's a different problem and again I still wouldn't use salt.

More water volume = cleaner water.
