New Aqarium Gravel and fake plant

I got some new AQ Gravel and fake plant yesterday and washed it using a colander that I use to clean the fish gravel with and also let the gravel and plant soak a while in hot water. I noticed it had like that new smell still to the gravel and plant still, then I got a suggestion from a member on here to boil the gravel and add a little AQ Salt, so I did this last night and still notice a bit of that smell. Is it ok to change out the gravel and plant in my Betta's tank now or is there anything else I should do first to make it safer?

I am just concerned this lingering new smell could harm him...

Thanks for you help.

That "new gravel smell" does wear off, however if you are concerned I would leave the gravel sitting in water for a few days.

I wash mine with hot water and vinegar, equal amounts. Then rinse three times :)

Thanks. The vinegar kind of scares me too, don't want that lingering. Maybe I will let it soak in some water for a day with some fish conditioner.

Maybe I'm just too much of a worry wort. ;)

I use vinegar instead of bleach :p Mainly because I am allergic to it haha... I rinse the heck out of my gravel :p

But yes, letting it sit will be good... PLUS it will get the dyes out too. I find some gravel (here mainly blue or red) stains everything unless you let it sit for a couple days.

Oh ya I would be petrified to use bleach. I'd be afraid f not getting that all out. This gravel is Black and the plant is blk/white. I am now soaking them so we shall see, fingers crossed.

Thanks again.
