Hmmm, not sure how you even got the thing to fit in there. Is it submersible? Yeah, I would say just be really careful for the time being - which you're doing :) That really sounds like overkill, but my experience is a bigger heater than the old 5w per gallon ratio, even 10w wasn't enough. I ended up with a 75w for a 5g tank which has worked well, and I still have plenty of wiggle room on the dial for a cold Upstate NY winter.

Heaters can sometimes malfunction and get stuck heating. Ask some fish keepers how they heat their tanks. Most of them for big tanks, never use one big heater in case of malfunction. They use two small heaters that are both still the same watts added up, but if one malfunctions there isn't enough heating capacity for it to heat the water very high and it can't heat very fast, thus it should be spotted if it does and it shouldn't shock the fish too much.
