Well, first and foremost, bettas don't get lonely. They are very happy swimming in a 5.5 gallon by him/herself.

I don't know anything about platies, so I can't help you in that department but if you do want a community, try tetras.

I heard that tetras are horrible fin nippers.....

I know people that have tetras in their tanks and all fish are fine. I'm sure in the beginning it's not peaceful, but you can't expect that at first.
