Advise on Platys?

So my mom wants to start a Platy tank. I have no idea how to care for them (beacuse I've only had bettas). I have a 5 gal tank with a heater, water conditioner, gravel and plants. anything else I need like a filter or something. I know they are schooling fish, so how many should i get? any advise is greatly appreciated

5 gallons is too small. In 10 gallons you could start with five, keeps up to 10 adults, and be prepares to deal with the rest of the babies.
Getting an all female group is an option.

The larger the aquarium, the less issues with agression which nearly all fish exhibit from time to time, and the temperature and water parameter's will remain more stable than in smaller tank's which is key to fishes health.
Next to no swimming room for fishes in five gallons, and if fish begin to harrass other fish,no room to get away.

Agree. 5 gallons is small for active fish.
The only things I've seen accepted for a 5 gallon is 1 betta, or 1 dwarf puffer fish.
