It's good for making sure wounds don't get infected, but not good for normal water changes.

Huh, I guess since his scratches seem mostly healed over I'll cool it with the aquarium salts. What do you all think of Stress Coat? Reasonable as a conditioner or is it overkill?

Api also came out with a conditioner that is concentrated. Like Prime, you only need one to three drops per gallon.

I use and like Aqueon Water Conditioner for water changes its only 2 drops per gallon or 1 tsp for 10 gallons...I called the number on the bottle to find out how much it was per gallon and thats what they told me but I always add 4 drops just to be sure. It also has something in it that aids in restoring slime coat and also helps if your fish is stressed in anyway.

Me and my family have always used API Stress Coat+, it's a fantastic product and helps reduce stress without the continued use of aquarium salt. I've not tried other water conditioners with the exception of some tetra stuff that came in an old tank kit a fair while ago but I prefer API due to its reliability as a brand and the large bottles have a dispenser unit (similarly to soap dispensers) that is very easy to dose. I don't know how it compares to Prime price wise but I love this stuff.

Great! I think all of those options are available to me. I think this calls for a trip to the LFS. I love having an excuse to go. Anybody know if it's okay to just start using the new conditioner? Or should I ease him on to it somehow? Of course I'll acclimate him when I change the water, but is there something else I should do?

I use Prime after every water change. Seems to keep my betta from stressing too much.

Most likely just use the new conditioner straight away. Make sure to calculate the right amount to put in the tank.
