Tom, my first Betta fish, looks extremely ill. He's lying on the bottom on the tank (kinda curled up) and just staying there. Occasionally he comes up for air. He is in a 5 gal tank and he's 3 years old. Any help would be appreciated. Thank you.

1) how often are water changes, anything fuzzy on him?
2) 3 yrs old you say? He may be getting near the end of the train ride. 3 years is pretty ancient for most pet shop bettas. :(

I have head of some betta living for 5 years but most 1-3.
His water is 60? Poor guy...maybe once the water is warm again, he will be feeling better

Oh gee Warm the poor little boy up and see if he acts better. I have heard people say 5 years, and saw a post by one breeder who said they had a 10 year old male.
So, at 3, he may be old, but I think he's just frozen....
I have heard a few people say they had a betta that was 5 but i don't think its very common. Pet shop bettas are exposed to all sorts of things that compromise their immune systems. That, and I think if they are kept in unheated bowls their whole life, the cold slows down their metabolism so they live longer. Thats just my theory though.

He's underNeath the filter lying sideways and the top of his head is a white/peach color. He's alive. I put my finger up to the glass and his fun moved. So do you think it's just old age? His water is at 78 now
