I had that problem as well till i got to uni. Most of the people who suffer from that dont really stand for themselves (i know i didnt).

Dont fear to become a little bit more aggressive (to defend yourself not lash at every one).

A few days ago I did an absolutely FANTASTIC painting with oil pastels and turpenoid....it is of a sorrel Arabian mare in a field with pine trees in the back, and there's a gorgeous little palomino foal lying in the grass next to her. It was my first shot at impressionism without my art instructor in the room (she doesn't help me-- she just makes sure I'm not doing anything dumb hehe). It's really pretty....the horses have lots of purples and yellows and oranges and pine greens mixed into them....really a very stunning piece. Took me around 6 hours with distractions to totally finish.
Then my dad came outside to do his "professional" criticism. Yeah, like he's a true art critic or something.
He told me that the mare's tail is swishing over her hindquarters, but it looks like it's GROWING on her. The foal's eye is too wide, the hooves are the wrong shade of pink, they should have less red in them, the pine trees are too dark, BLAH BLAH BLAH BLAH BLAH. I know it's beautiful though....I know I'm really good but my dad is just such a critic!

What, is your dad a horse expert too so he can tell if the horses are right? If it's an Arabian foal, the eyes will be wide. :) Now I want to see this beautiful painting.

Sadly, art can be a brutal field. When my brother went to Rhode Island School of Design, the teachers regularly made students cry during critiques and these were students who were EXPECTING brutal critiques.

My dad literally knows nothing about horses.
He always tries to make me sound dumb....a week ago we were hanging up signs for a yard sale, and I gave him thumbtacks so the signs would stay on the telephone poles better, but he took nails and kept saying "Don't pretend you're smarter than me. In the end, the signs got blown off the poles and I hung them up with tacks, and they stayed up *headdesk*

But yes..... the horses don't look so Arabian (I like to change up the pictures....I hate copying exactly what is shown), and I don't think it matters because my dad doesn't know the difference anyway.
I hung the picture up on my wall (I had put it on my bed and closed the door, but my mom showed it to my aunt who left it on the couch....naturally may cat sat on it an CRUMPLED IT)

Well it's on my wall next to my bed now, and my dad started pointing out more stuff......he's like "you just can't do that! You have to learn more" but of course I've been taking lessons for 5 years... UGH.
