Help with my tank temp.

My tank temperature is 23 C or 73 F, I have one fish, it's a 1 gallon tank.

I can't buy a heater (My mom doesn't think it's necessary, even though I've told her he needs one.) Is that too cold for him to live in? I think it is, but I'm not sure. Also he has his left gill looks a bit swollen or something, is that a result of the cold water?

It's a bit chilly for a Betta so don't be surprised if he's lethargic. :/ As for the gills, cold water doesn't do that. There's a different reason for that.

Swollen gills... Hm. I don't know. :/ Are you sure it's swollen? Might be a problem with ammonia.

I got him 25 hours ago, and so I haven't cleaned it yet. Someone said to to a 50% water change every week if I have a 1 gallon, does that sound right?

Also I am going to buy one, but I have to buy one online since the pet store in my town is so damn small. The one I'm looking at is 15$ and I'm ordering it tomorrow. And is there a way I can get rid of the ammonia?

Not sure, theres a bit of.. something, poking out of his gills. Looks a bit blackish reddish, very dark, and only on his left side.

Water changes will get rid of ammonia unless it's in your tap water.
1 100% and 1 50% per week will keep him away from stress.
