I went ahead and did his water change (50%) and rearranged his tank a bit and he seems a bit more mellow and is actually taking breaks from his "pacing" to explore. I rarely turn his light on because he's in a naturally bright room. He's not in any direct sun but we have lots of windows and a skylight. I wonder if he's more calm now that the sun has gone down bc he cant see his reflection as much? Oh well, I'm just glad to hear it's not super unusual behavior and he should probably settle in over time.
