My Little Prince

This is my first betta, his name is Prince William. I thought it would be funny to call him that and I was watching the Olympics when we named him. I got him from petsmart and I've had him for about 2 weeks now. And, except for some torn fins I think he's pretty healthy. He's so cool too, because sometimes he's a deep shade of blue, almost purple, then sometimes he looks green or aquamarine. He's like a mood ring!

I never thought I could love a fish so much. I've had a goldfish before but it wasn't as entertaining as Prince William.

In six months, if I can make this work and my Betta is still healthy, I plan on getting another one. I want to wait because since this is my first time, I want to get used to him and all the routines of water changing and feeding, etc. I saw a really pretty Betta at the store, he's kind of yellow/white with translucent fins, really cool. I want to get one of those next.

Same with my bettas, but I think because they're hunters & have to defend their territories in the wild from other fish, they behave differently.

The ones I choose from the stores I usually try observe carefully for 5-15 minutes, and I pick the ones that seem inquisitive & move around a lot even though they're stuck in a little cup.

I saw a couple do handstands in the cup looking for food, and made me wonder what they would do in a full sized tank with decorations, etc...

Unfortunately for them, I didn't like their coloration, so I put them back.


The bettas that just lay there motionless and stare, I don't bother with.

Right now he's only in a 1 gallon tank, but I will be getting a bigger tank in a couple of weeks, hopefully next week but it's not for certain yet. :D

When we got him I moved my finger around and waited to see if he would follow my finger and he did. Then we put his cup beside other Bettas and he reacted to them. That's why we chose him. He's really energetic and swims a lot even though he's currently in a small tank.

Thanks! They really are awesome fish! I think it's funny when he tries to flare at himself whenever he sees his reflection. In the future I wanna learn to train my fish to swim through a hoop or something. That'd be great!

I've moved him to a bigger tank! Yay! It's a 5.5 Gallon tank. I forgot to take a photo of him in his 1 gallon tank. He enjoyed the small tank, but he LOVES this big tank. He's been swimming all night and only stopping to take a breath. It's so funny.

I added some big stones with the little ones and he likes to get in between those. I also added a new toy and some fake fabric plants with my real plants. It has a filter that came with the kit, I don't know what kind it is but the water current bothers him so I've turned it off for now. I'm looking online how to fix this problem. I haven't installed the heater yet because it's still pretty warm and the thermometer says his water is at 80F.

He's been swimming more energetically and it's getting harder to take a photo of him. LOL.
