When people on here say "rescue" it usually means getting a Betta free or cheap because it is in some way unhealthy or needs care.

May I suggest getting the biggest, healthiest, most active and responsive fish that you like the looks of.

Get one. Lavish the best care you can learn how to give. Expand from there.

That's just what I'd do, is all.

thanks for the advice Hallyx,
i only meant rescue because even though my tank is only 9 litres it would be huge compared to the Chinese take-away containers the shops around here keep the betta's in ;)
