New Betta Fish

Hi i have just bought a new betta fish. He is in a 3litre triangle corner tank. I have a heater in there set around 24 degrees as i have heard that they need the water at a certain temp. Thing is all he does is sit there with his nose in the corner of the tank and only occasionally swims around. Is there something wrong with him? Also is a heater necessary as it does detract from the looks of the tank.

Upgrade the tank to a 2.5 gallons. More space for him to swim around. A heater is necessary if you live in wintry areas. Temperature must be kept consistent between 26-28 degrees.

Ok thanks i'll try that. I have a spare tank with an inbuilt light that i can use. Will need to look at getting some plants and ornaments also. Is it necessary to get a filter in a tank that big. It comes wtih one but i'm not sure that it'll cause too much agitation to the water. Can i leave it off. The temp here is around 21-25 degrees during the day in winter. Drops down at night. So i'm assuming the water would be around that or less when out of the sun .. heater it is.

All you need is a sponge filter. Do not turn off the filter and heater. The heater will automatically turn off if the temp is above or just levelled with what was assigned.

you definatly need a heater..you can get a flat submersible heater by Hador for about $5 ...it will raise your water temp enough without frying your Betta. He will be more active when he he is warmer.
