Hello! The majority of my plants are silk, and came from either Petsmart or Petco. I am pretty happy with them! Of course they're relatively new (have been in use for a couple months now), but I haven't noticed any disintegrating from the plants. However, since they are fabric, sometimes a small little thread will float off but it's no harm to your fish and it settles to the bottom where it is easy to clean up with a gravel vacuum or turkey baster.
I would stay away from anything that has metal parts, though, as I've heard people complain about them rusting and therefor affecting the parameters in the aquarium.
Too bad your fish's favorite plant had to be thrown away! Maybe you can make it up to him by spoiling him with new plants ;) hahaa
