stupid question (gravel vacuum)

so until recently we've been doing manual sift-and-rinse gravel cleanings, but yesterday i bought a gravel vacuum, and i followed the directions on the package, but couldn't get it to do anything but suck half a gallon of water out. the gravel, and nasties therein, never started going up the tube, and i'm very frustrated. can anyone help?

thanks, i just did, and realised my problem...i had been trying to sweep it the way you would when vacuuming a carpet, rather than suctioning chunks of gravel up. that's what i get for applying household chore logic to a fish tank problem!

LOL, yeah you've got to push it all the way down into the gravel. You'll be surprised of the crud that comes up from underneath. The water I remove from my 10g is BLACK in the bucket from the gunk vacuumed up. Who knew 1 Betta & 1 snail were so dirty.
