I've seen petcos that take awesome care of bettas and other petcos that take awful care if bettas.

Look for a store that keeps the water clean.
Look for a betta that is swimming & active.
Look for a betta that is not laying on the bottom of the cup.
Not bloated.
Does NOT have it's scales sticking out like a pinecone.
Eyes are not overly large (pop eye)

Petco always has the best variety of colors and tail types. They have veiltails, halfmoons, doubletails, delta tails, dragons, plakats, females, and babies.
And they always have shelves full of bettas. I went to a local fish store, and they ojnly had about 10 bettas and they were all veiltails. I recently went to Petsmart for the first time, and they only had a small area of bettas, and they mostly had veiltails, doubletails, and a few dragons. But they keep them in this bluish water that makes it hard to tell what color they are. Although it looked like one of the ones they had was a white cellophane delta tail. I wanted it!! But I don't have any more tanks!

I went to petco recently, and actually I found the exact same. As I said in my most recent thread, I had to force myself not to just buy a beautiful deep blue crowntail. Thanks!

For me, Petsmart has the better conditions--the water is always clean and treated and I have yet to see one that's passed away on the floor--but I've gotten them from PetCo too. My longest lived was a petco baby.

Michael gets Aqueon betta pellets and freeze dried bloodworms. I upgraded him to a 5 gallon today so next paycheck I'm investing in a container of NLS Betta formula.
