Havent succeed in ruining mine after one and a half months of abuse so you are to a good start i say.

Try to tie it down into a rock or driftwood and remember not to bury the rhizome as i did cause it rots. Mine is healing even after one month of been buried though and the last week i noticed little leaves spurring out of the sides.
