red and green algae in my filter cartridge

Anyone know what would cause red and green slimy algae looking stuff on the filter cartridge? I have been running this tank for a few months now and it is a 2.5 minibow and is kept about 78-80 during the day and falls to about 70-72 over night, (i will be getting a heater tommorrow to stop that btw). I do a weekly water change of about 50% at least and sometimes more depending how much debree is on the bottom of the tank and i change the cartridge every 3 or so weeks. I have never had this happen before. It is not in front of a window or in bright light and nothing else has changed. there was a few tiny strands of green slime on the top of one of the plants aswell. Any ideas guys. Doesn't seem to be bothering him at all but it happend in the new cartridge within a week of putting this new one in and i am stumped. Any ideas would be great. Thanks

Anarchis or and Marimo will get rid of the nutrients before it gets them covering the carterage might help the algae you have likes CO2 and hates O2 also putting peace lilies might help block out light and take the nutrients.
