Is there any nitrite in your tap water?

Not in the tap water. We have ammonia in the tap water, so we have been using the Prime. The nitrites didn't appear until after the ammonia dropped.

Well, maybe it's a false reading? Test Strips are really inaccurate. I had strips before and the reading was 6.5, but it's actually 7.6. :\

Will get a liquid test when we get back to the shop sometime. For now, after the last 50% water change, the nitrites are down.
