I second the plant suggestion. With only 3 plants in my 3 gallon tank, I haven't had to change the water in 2 weeks. I keep testing for everything and the plants are eating up all the ammonia and nitrates/nitrites. And the water is super clear :) Coupled with regular dosing of Prime, I should think that would at least get everything down to a safe level. Although this nitrite business is a bit crazy!

Did you get those at your LPS? Or online?

Both, I think it's easier on the plants to buy them at the LPS. The ones that were already in water at Petco are doing the best.

Just to chime in: To check if it is distilled water, check it for KH and GH. If they are 0 or very very low, then it is more likely to be distilled.

However I definitely have to agree with getting some plants to soak those compounds up. A large tub of plants to purify the water for you would be your best bet. Get some SPRING water for now (or test the laundry room water and the KH of water fountain) while setting up your purification centre.
