Baby Betta Care

I'm thinking after I get Aquarius all set up I want to get a baby betta and raise it so I can see it become an adult. See what color it becomes and what gender it turns out. I just need to know some basic baby betta things so that I may take care of a baby to the best of my abilities.

They need very clean water to grow well, so good filtration and frequent water changes are necessary. Also a heater, of course. The babies I bought from a breeder LOVE their grindal worms, which can be fed starting at about a month old. Cultures are available on eBay and they are super low maintenance. You can also buy frozen brine shrimp and daphnia at your local pet store and they like those a lot too. Babies can't swallow normal sized betta pellets, so you'll need to crush them or buy pellets that are pre-crushed or smaller specifically for them to eat.

I have had a disaster with a heavy fake plant falling on top of a baby and killing her, so definitely make sure any decor is stable. Babies love to hang out in plants.

Depending on the size of your tank and the baby's age, you may want to only keep it half or 3/4 of the way full so the baby doesn't have to work too hard to reach the surface. By 2 months this isn't a concern and you want to make sure your fishie gets lots of exercise :)

Thanks :D

Normally I get five gals at least but I might have a smaller critter keeper, maybe 3gal, not sure. I could use that for a nursery for a little while. Around what gae does their color start coming in and you can tell their gender?

Color starts coming in at 1 month, maybe even sooner. But it doesn't stop coming in for a long time XD I have some 3 month old Copper babies and they're still coloring up.

Eeeeee it must be so exciting to see them color up and grow. Watching some video's on youtube I want to make a big oriental themed sunken Asian garden/temple for my next Betta and possibly an Atalantas themed tank for Aquarius. I'm thinking decent 10 to 20 gal tanks each.
