Oh my goodness. I know boarding at Memorial is expensive and it's almost cheaper to rent a room or small apartment. I know my uni offers a service called Off Campus Housing which teams up with landlords and home owners who want to make some money off extra rooms and stuff. All the locations are checked and monitered by OCH staff (like, making sure there are adequate conditions for living etc) and they are relatively cheap. An old co-worker used to rent out 3 spare rooms for like 400-500$ each including meals. So that's 1500$ extra in her pocket per month and students get to live somewhere for cheap.
I've gone off on a tangent.
Check to see the living options around whatever uni you decide to go with!!
Memorial University of Newfoundland (mun) is the cheapest uni east of Montreal, largest campus in Eastern Canada and boasts unique programs and such. There are almost as many international students and students from Canada than there are Newfies!! lol
There are a lot of Nova Scotian students here.
