I have my male betta and a nerite snail in a filtered 5 gallon mini-bow. Velvet (the betta) is not aggressive, and doesn't seem to really notice Usain Bolt (the nerite), I have only spotted him staring at Usain twice and one of those times was when I first put Usain in with him. Velvet doesn't show any aggressive behaviour except for flaring at himself when I turn the light on in the tank for a minute or two. Would some RCS be suitable for his tank? I'm not big on ghosties as they are hard to spot sometimes.

I keep my aggressive Betta in a 10 gallon with an apple snail. The snails armor protects it. My fish barely pays attention. Every time I add ghost shrimp they die. I would not be surprised if the Bettas predatory nature made your fish eat the shrimp. They are bite sized.

i have a betta who i thought was really non-agressive. I had a ghost in there to check if he'd be ok with some RCS. he ignored it. So I thought "woot! Let's get some pretty shrimp"

He ate 4 of them on the first day.

Are you able to get RCS locally? if so, you could start with one or two, larger ones, and see how it goes. Otherwise, it's a bit of the luck of the draw.

Yeah I know for sure my male would eat them.

it's a crap shoot to be blunt. No way to tell except plopping some in and watching and waiting.

you might wanna float them in a betta cup or breeder box for a while, and pay close attention to how he reacts. a breeder box might be best so you can see how he reacts not only visually but to their smell as well (sometimes a betta will be fine when he just SEES a tankmate, but his predatory instinct kicks in when he can smell them too)

What does the OP do if the Betta tries to eat them your plan involves a separate tank.

the only question is, are you squeamish about potentially watching the shrimp get torn apart and eaten?

hmm... I can only say that it's a tought one. my betta learnt to ignore them after pestering/nipping 8 of tem to death. the remaining two are extremely good at hiding.... I can tell you tht my tank is super well planted... The shrimps have just recently came out of hiding.
