Question How long are betta pellets safe/fresh?

I've just read an article on "Mysterious fish deaths" trying to pinpoint what may have caused Bali's death. I'm still thinking his was caused by an ammonia spike in my tank. However, this article mentioned "spoiled food"! I feed Omega One Betta Buffet, and the small container has lasted a while now. How can I tell if it's gone bad? Is there a time frame/expiration date on these things? Should I keep them in the fridge? I never thought about it until now, and wonder what ya'll may know about his topic. Thanks!

Hmm.... I never thought about that either! Although, I'm sure the betta would notice if the taste was off- mine seem to have culinary ambitions lol. So I don't think it would matter that much, even if it was a little stale?

Actually, I think maybe what they mean is food that has been left rotting in the tank.

I'm sorry he died. :\ If you have used the food over 8 months, I think it's expired already. I'm not sure...

My fishie food has expiration dates labeled on the bottom. If I'm reading it correctly, it says 2nd of May in 2015, and I bought this food over the summer about 3 to 4 months ago, so I HOPE it's not saying the 15th of May of 2002.

The dates on the bottom are only if they are unopened. I found out that once they are opened they should be used within 6-12 months at the most. They lose their nutritional value, and some may become rancid.

Eeek! Well then I better go to the Petstore today to get new fresh pellets. I use 3 different brands of pellets for variety, one different kind every day. Plus only my male Bettas can eat the bigger pellets of the one kind. So... Time for new Betta Nom Noms LOL.

I noticed my LPS is selling a few different brands than before. Maybe I'll try one of those this time.

I'd consider replacing opened foods every 5 months for the sake of keeping fresh food on hand.
