Unhappy Very high nitrates in extra-long cycle Help please!

Hi,
I had a sick betta with velvet and fin rot and he is just about all better (it took several weeks). Meanwhile, I bought him a bigger tank, 5.5 gallon and cycled it. It has been sitting for about 3 weeks. I've been adding some fresh water as I don't have a cover and it evaporates. But, this past week I didn't test it, got busy. I did add a gallon of water, though.
Meanwhile, I had to let a couple extra weeks go by because Betta was still showing signs of sickness. Now I want to put him in his new home and here are my readings:

Before treating:
Ammonia-was .25ppm
Nitrites-was .25ppm
Nitrates-was between 40 and 80 ppm

So I added some Seachem Prime and now the readings are:
Ammonia-just about .25ppm
Nitrites-0ppm
Nitrates-seems to be close to 40ppm

I think I did something wrong. Any suggestions, advice?

Thank you

Hello and welcome to the forum... you need to do a 50 percent water change and then check the levels again, you well still get reading of the levels even though you use Prime but the Prime will detox everything but only for 48 hours. Does that make sense or if you have anymore question please do ask okay...good luck ! You can put him in when your levels are 0 for the ammonia and 0 for nitrite but can still have a low reading for your nitrite which is the least toxic to your Betta.
