How often on water changes.

Recently I have been trying to organize everything in my life. One thing I have been really disorganized about is my water changes. I have a planner now, and I want to get a schedule going with my water changes.

Okay, so I have a filtered 5 gallon with one betta in it, how often should I do water changes with that one, and when should I pump the gravel.

AND

I have a 10 gallon tank with a 5 betta sorority and ghost shrimp, how often should I do that one?

Thanks for the help.

Hi is the 5 gallon cycled or no. I would usually recommend that tanks less than 5 should be changed twice a week. Once about 50% of the water and once 100% water change. However since you have a filter the tank can potentially be cycled and then you would only have to do about 25% water changes weekly. someone correct me if I am wrong on that.

Not so sure about the ten gallon.

Yes, as far as I know it is cycled, the readings are always as they should be.

And because it is cycled only 25% a week? That seems too easy on my part.

For the 5 Gallon cycled, I would do 50% weekly with a vacuum. Not sure about the 10 Gal sorority as I've never had one.

Cycling your tank has a huge advantage over an uncycled one, which is why it is generally recommended to cycle all your tanks if possible. Not only is it less work for the owner but it provides a more stable environment for your fish.

For the 5 gallon I would say at the least you should do 1 50% if cycled. If not cycled then 2 times a week one 50% change and one 100% change. For the 10 gallon if cycled once a week 25% water change if not one 100% water change or one 50% water change and one 100% water change.

+1 to LadyVictorian. I think 50% once a week should be the minimum, if cycled.
