~ Help setting up a tank ~

I have been researching fishkeeping and decided that I would like to get a Betta. I'm working on getting a 10 gallon tank but want to be sure that I'm not forgetting anything......

~ A plant or two
~ A decoration or two
~ Filter
~ A heater (I know this may not be required but I think it's a good idea)
~ Gravel
~ Food
~ Water conditioner (my water is hard although I do have a water softener which helps)
~ And of course, a betta when the tank is ready!

Am I missing anything? Any other suggestions? This is my first time doing this and I'd love to be successful :)

Sounds good. The heater is required, by the way. But, I would get a ton of plants and just load it with those, and maybe some driftwood.

Are you planning on live plants or silk/plastic?

I am really not sure whether I'm going to use live or fake plants...... what are the pros/cons? Do you have to have additional equipment to keep live ones?

Live plants will require a decent light (not just the standard 18 watt ones the fish store generally sells).

The pros:
-plants will help eliminate fish waste
-lots of extra fun; more live stuff to mess around with

The cons:
-more work, but only if you consider it work
-more expense: lighting and plants

Personally I'm pro plant! Also, you'll want a GOOD top for your tank, bettas are known to jump, and they don't always look where!
