plants and bulbs 100% water change

Hi

I have a 2.5 gallon tank. I change water twice a week. 50% once 100% the other. I want to start having a few live plants. I had betta bulbs before but I think doing the 100% water change and taking them out made them go brown.

So here my question what plants are good for a little tank and how do I not harm them doing 100% water change. When I take them out I do pour some of the old tank water in a bowl and place the plant in it until Im done cleaning the tank.

That's what I do but I don't have any rooted plants/bulbs. I have anacharis looped around fake rocks, anubias rooted to wood and hornwort floating or weighted with wood. They all come out easily.
