Well yeah because they only go for the obvious monster/evil. Its like Kubrick's awful adaptation of The Shining. The real evil isn't the hotel. The hotel is simply a manifestation of something far scarier and closer to home: a father trying to do right by his wife and young son and support them all the while fighting alcoholism and his failure as a writer after a promising start. Now you tell me which is scarier?
As for Jaws, I enjoyed the movie for what it was, separate from the book.
