How to tell if a rock is safe?

We live in a verry rocky area granite is every where you look. So are a bunch of others. How can the average person tell if a rock is safe for an aquarium.? we need to add some rocks to our tank shipping is crazy and no pet store near us carrys them. Since we have so many beautiful rocks around us I would love to use a couple. How do I figure out if they are safe.

If I remember correctly you put vinegar on it & if it bubbles don't use it. To clean them using extremely hot water or run through the dishwasher then let bake in the sun for a day or two.

i'd let it sit in a tank with nothing but conditioned water for several days and then do a test on your water quality (preferrably with a kit that can detect impurities like heavy metals) and use that to help you decide.
