Excessive flaring at Reflection.

My male betta never used to flare, even at mirrors. But recently he has started flaring at his reflection, that he only sees when I turn the room lights off. This has made his tail extremely tattered.

I cannot keep my room lights on 24/7, so what should I do to stop this? Any way to make the tank not reflect his image?

Do you turn his tank lights off when your lights are off? Or does he flare when his tank light is off too?

1.) does your lttle guy have a tank light?
when my betta's tank light is on, he flares at his reflection when my room light is off as well. during the day or when i'm home, i simply keep his tank light turned off... until at night when i'm in and have the room light on as well...then i turn his tank light on and he's fine.
even w/o a tank light, sometimes a betta can flare when their tank is positioned beside a white wall...or by a wall corner. this happened to me. i went to a pet store to buy a picture background for the tank to hide his reflection. dark colors like black or blue only make hi reflection more noticeable. natural looking backgrounds containing pictures of plants and such you'd find similar in a real tank should hide his refection. hope it helps :)

This happened to me. My betta is so beautiful but now he has blow outs on his dorsal fin! :((( I am now starting to turn off the lights at night when he is flaring constantly...He has not healed yet ;( I've heard putting more plants in the tank will help distort the reflection.. ????

Yeah he only flares when his tank lights are on, but the room lights are off.

So yes, he does have tank lights.

Turn off the tank light when the room lights are off. That's your answer.

Or get some of that wallpaper stuff.

Ghost has never flared at himself or me since the wallpaper blocks out most of the glass other then the front.

If you are going to keep the room lights off and the tank light on, then there really isn't much that you can do to stop him from flaring unfortunately. He should eventually calm down, but it can take weeks.

Make sure the filter is on low or baffled as to not make it easier for him to shred his fins while flaring.
