it's a safe bet that if you buy female livebearers from a pet store with gender integrated sell tanks, they'll come to you pregnant. the stress of the move to a new environment means they'll probably miscarry their first batch, or deliver and then eat the fry.

Platies are like Guppies and Mollies. Females will likely be pregnant and have several live batches even if you don't have any males in the tank. I got my latest fish over three months ago and one of the reds decided to have fry recently even though I didn't buy any males. Right now I have 4 blue fry and at least 2 red. Could be more, they're so small and I thought I only had 3 blue until another popped up. Most will get eaten but some might survive. Who knows how many fry I stared out with to end up with those few. Just be prepared that chances are they will have more fry later on.

Females can carry sperm to "get pregnant" with for up to 6 months after recieving. Usually fish are too stressed in the pet stores to want to have babies, so they wait until in a calmer, home environment and use the sperm then basically.

Plates can live in brackish water and guppies can live in saltwater so adding a bit of aquarium salt even though it does not need it and aquarium salt does not effect salinity it is good for health.
