tank problems

Hi, Sprinkles has been in QT in a cup for the past week or more to try to help him. He's swimming a lot and its usually upright so I let him back in the big tank. He was doing fine until he swam by the filter and got stuck to it. He was in there for maybe two minutes until i scooped him back up. He is now super pouty but worn out. I'm thinking of trading him to a smaller tank, but the male in there is so skittish I'm afraid he won't do well in a divided tank. Ugh, decisions. I also don't want an open spot in the tanks for another fish to come live here.

Can you slow the filter intake a little? A lot of people here use sponges to baffle the intake and make it so that the fish can't get stuck to it.
