Question Worried about my betta's scales

Hi,

I have had my betta 6 months now, he (Sharky) is my the first one i've ever kept, though i have had community aquariums (mollies, guppies, platys, cory, pleco.. etc etc) for few years, so have all the basic and important general knowledge of keeping aquarium.

Im still learning lots about bettas and i have recently become concerned as he is getting white scales over him. I know there is something called 'marbling', though im not certain i totally understand this, but i dont know if its normal or whether he has the beginnings of some fish disease. I have very little experience with these as have never had to tackle them with fish i have kept so far.

He eats well and seems very active in general. I have tried to take some pictures although he refuses to stay still and pose for camera, so apologies they are not great! - i can keep on trying!

I hope someone can shed some light for me whether i need to worry about anything?!?

Thank you!!

In the first picture, it looks like it's on his dorsal fin too. It might be ick.

No... Ich doesn't look like that. It *might* be Lympho. Can you fill out the questions sticky on the Emergency and Diseases forum..? If you can't find it, I'll get a link.

9 Gallons..? That tank is pretty badly stocked.. :[

It's not overstocked but the Pleco needs to go and you'll need more Cories. Mollies prefer brackish water, and healthier in there as so. Let me make it simpler. Your water change schedule needs to change and at least a 50% per week. But that's the Betta and Cories. Don't want ammonia to kill your fishes.

Pleco - It's the common one, correct..? Those need at least 75 gallons minimum due to the ammonia so it will need to go despite the size. You might even stall it's growth so I suggest moving or a rehoming.
Cories - Need at least 4 so you might need to add more, remember to QT.
Mollies- Prefers brackish water and needs at least a 20 gallon tank.

I suggest moving the Betta to a QT tank. If the scales are just white, then it's just coloring. But if it's sticking out.. That's a problem. :o

thanks for help and advice.

we have second tank which is 200litres (40 something gallon i think?) which fish soon get moved into so i am not worried there. it has mainly platys and neons at the moment there.

the cory were originally more but now down to two, am not getting more for time being, they are not stressed and have been doing well.

otherwise, advise from the aquatic specialist i get fish from -- mollies are hardy and can do well in freshwater or brackish, and as for pleco, was advised 200litre was plenty, kept one some years ago. perhaps they are wrong but i use two places and both advice was very similar from each. ???

i keep tank well filtered and have not had problems losing fish so not really too concerned there. have always had healthy fish. the 36litre tank is only new this year, but other has been going for years now with no problems.
