is it finrot or is he doing this to himself..?

Here's dick, my new veil tail betta. He's starting to look more like a crown tail since i got him about two months ago. :I

It doesn't really look like any fin rot I've ever seen...the water levels are normal so he really has no business getting rot, I'd think?

Temp: 80 F
Ammonia: 0
Nitrite: 0
Nitrate: <10

It's a 4 gal tank (holding 3 gallons of water though, I measured) so he's got a fair amount of wiggle room.

Nothing really that i think he could hurt himself of or get hurt by? There's a plastic cave on the bottom, lots of live plants, and two mystery snails.

I haven't caught him biting his tail...could he maybe be blowing his fins out? this is really the first time i've experienced something like this.

Thanks for reading and any help is appreciated. Dick says byebye!

Yeah...his tail hasn't gotten any shorter/isn't missing any chunks, it's just...splitting?

I have seen splitting like that before, but usually not that uniform. I'm thinking he might have a bit of CT blood in him. Otherwise I'd say the rays are just branching apart. If that makes sense. As long as they aren't infected or bloody, I wouldn't worry.
