Dividing the tank into two parts so neither fish can physically interact with one another. That is splitting a tank.

so if i split my 5 gal. in 2 i can have 2 males or 2 females.

either or, you could keep two males in a split tank or two females. Just make sure the males can't see each other that well to keep them from stressing out and constant flaring.
