Hi! I'm planning on getting a 10 gallon to divide for 2 betta male's. My plan is to have the filter and the heater in its own divided section in the middle, but I do not know which filter to choose, if anyone has experiences with these please help!

I'm not a big fan of Tetra filters---noise and reliability issues.

The Marina is a nice filter but may be too wide to fit conveniently between two dividers. A double-divided tank is a good idea, by the way. Many of us use that method.

We also like sponge filters for cycled Betta tanks. The Hydro sponge filter is among the best available. This model would fit better between the dividers and would provide adequate area for nitrifying bacteria.

I've use the Marina s10 in my 5.5 gallon and really like it, but I'd probably suggest using the s15 or s20 for much larger than that. However, I do agree with Hally that it could be too wide so you may have to get creative if you want to go that route.

Ok, thanks a lot guys! With the hydro sponge filter I won't have to be spending money on replacement cartridges right? And do you know how many water changes I will be making with each filer?

Also, it will be a planted 10 gallon, so I don't know if that makes a difference for which filter I should use.

If you want to cycle your tank i will give you a few links where you can find helpful information on cycling. I don't cycle my tanks so i don't know. I just know at least 50% of the water once or twice a week with gravel vacuuming and filter rinsing.
But also remember to quarantine new fish and new plants. I just read when someone cross contaminate equipment and one betta was sick so now they not sure if another betta is also sick

No cartridge replacing with the sponge filters. They last forever. Just need a little squeezing to clean them every couple of months.

One 50% change per week once your tank is cycled. That's to remove DOCs and remineralize and stabilize pH.

Plants make no difference in which filter you use, or the other way around. Betta like lots of plants; you might, too. Plus it's good for the water.

Oh, and...I misread. You're setting up a 10g. So that Hydro for 10g will be just fine should you choose that one. It's just that Betta putout so little waste, that even the smaller one will be sufficient.
