High Nitrates lack of water changes allowed it to build up.

The light... is it flourescent?? Or is the tank around a window??
I have an algae problem but its because I used to leave a 6500k light ( k=kelvins . It stimulates photosynthesis) for like over 12 hours a day!

If they are really high they encourage plant growth and algae growth.
