Aquarium Sands

I'm interested in getting a sand to replace my gravel. I was wondering which sands would be the best?

The closest fish shop is my local petsmart (Petco really far from where I live). So whats the best sand I can get for my aquarium to make it look beautiful. easy to maintain and beneficial?

A lot of people actually use play sand or pool filter sand, it's much less expensive. Of course depends on if you want something with color or not.

I have used play sand, and aquarium sand... I like aquarium sand for it is not as messy!!! I like the beige, or white coloration for sand... giving it a nice caribbean look I suppose :p

I have CaribSea Supernaturals in a couple of my tanks. It's a bit pricy and can take awhile to rinse out all the dust/crud, but it's absolutely gorgeous. The black color looks really nice with live plants, too.

Ah excellent, so I'll just get them since I don't mind the price for now. Also what do you guys use to rinse them and how do you guys rinse them?

I just put it in the bucket I use for my tanks, fill part way with water, agitate to kick up the crud, and pour out the water while being careful to not pour out too much sand. Repeat until water comes out clear. The sand comes with a packet of stuff to help clear the water - I used it once with no noticeable results.

Dunno if it helps or not, but I've found that about 5-8lbs gives about a 1" deep layer in a standard 5 gallon aquarium, and a 20lbs bag yields a 1-1.5" layer in a tank with a 12"x24" footprint.
