I have helped myself to rocks and some snails from a local lake. I could never find any wood though, I ended up buying mopani wood from petco. It wasn't too $$, about $10. There are also sellers on ebay that have some nice looking peices of driftwood.

I didn't do anything special to the rocks since its not in a populated area. I just washed it off with hot water.

got myself 3 pieces of wood and some rocks from the local resovoir this morning, the water was so cold and the snow was all on the ground and loads of leaves so it was hard to properly forage,i have the wood and rocks in a bucket of boiling water as we speak, some of the rocks are really pretty whites and yellowy colours, ive no idea what kind ofminerals they are made out of,ill try post pics soon in case they are not good ffor the ph and such in the tank..

thr 3 pieces of wood look ok,they were in the river from trees that blew over in the storm i think,i broke off some soggy soft pieces with my hand then washed them under the tap and put them in boiling water,i have no idea what kind of wood it is though,it could be anything, ill try post pics soon too,ill soak them for a week or so and then dry them out and inspect them.the biggest piece has many soft spots, gonna have to go to work on it with a spoon in a couple days
