Flaring is a form of exercise. If you do it in little amounts, 5 minutes every other day is what I do.

For the biting, long finned males will bite their tail when it gets too heavy and when it's hard for them to swim. Just rearrange his tank, buy some more silk or live plants or hiding holes.

Its not just because of big fins the amount of stimulation affects it.
